My name is Kjrsten Dorwart, and I am the Director and one of the 3 yr. Old teachers at Summit Learning Academy, and proud to call SLA my home. I have been teaching preschool for five years, a Special Olympics coach for the Ottawa Eagles for the past 10 years, and involved with the special needs community for the past 25 years. My husband and I also owned a business called Play4Today that specialized in the design and construction of soft-contained playgrounds for major fast-food restaurants across the United States.
I am a graduate of Illinois Valley Community College with a major in Early Childhood Education. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, even when I was young. Back then, I was diagnosed with several learning disabilities, which required the need for Special Education services. Due to my experience, I am committed to supporting students with disabilities who require self-advocacy skills for a successful future.
When I am not in the director chair or teaching, I enjoy being with my husband of 24 years, my three adult children, daughter-in-law, grandson, and our four dogs! I also read classic literature and crime novels, enjoy gardening, the great outdoors, watching professional wrestling, and I am an avid concert-goer.
